Spotlight Follow-up On: Bailey Starkey
Earlier this year, we featured new Consultant Bailey Starkey. We caught up with Bailey this month and asked her to share some of the highlights from her first year in business.
HOW HAVE YOU AND YOUR TEA BUSINESS CHANGED IN THE YEAR SINCE YOU FIRST JOINED TEA QUEENS?
Since joining Tea Queens, I have become more confident in my speaking abilities when I present my tea at parties. I have grown my business by sharing the joys of loose leaf tea with new customers, and I myself have become even more of a tea aficionado. The wonderful discounts I enjoy as a Tea Queen have allowed me to grow my tea stash and to try samples of so many different teas! I am much more able now to describe and recommend teas to customers.
YOU HAD A VERY SUCCESSFUL TEA PARTY IN OCTOBER. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ARE SOME OF THE KEYS TO A SUCCESSFUL TEA PARTY?
A big part of the great party I had with Jamie was Jamie herself – the hostess. She invited a great group of friends, she provided a delightful spread of little teatime treats, and she was the one who suggested serving London Fogs at the party. Alongside my two staples, Orange Creamsicle and Lemon Chiffon, I served steaming, foamy mugs of London Fogs made with Creamy Earl Grey tea. They were so delicious and comforting on a cool fall night.
I think some keys of a good tea party are: a great hostess, inviting a lot more people than you plan to see come (there are always many who cannot come, including last minute cancellations), serving your favorite teas that others are likely to enjoy too, and I at least tried to keep my tea talk fairly short and entertaining, without a lot of pressure to buy. We are friends at a tea party remember, not just customers and saleswomen. Also, I always try to emphasize whatever sales special is going on, because it is usually a great deal that your customers will want to take advantage of.
CONGRATULATIONS, YOU NOW HAVE FOUR TEA CONSULTANTS ON YOUR TEAM. WHAT WOULD YOU TELL OTHERS CONSIDERING THIS OPPORTUNITY?
The benefits of being a Tea Queen are so irresistible that all I had to do to “build my team” was to let others know how much I enjoy Tea Queens tea, how much better of a deal I get by buying it wholesale for myself, how much fun I have sharing this tea with others, and how low pressure this business opportunity is. We get to be our own bosses, making our tea business fit into our own unique niches in our own lives. It just so happens that when someone becomes a Tea Queen because of me, it benefits both of us. I am not afraid to “lose a customer” because I will get a small commission from their future orders, and they will save a lot of money by buying their tea wholesale plus having the opportunity to earn money as their business grows. It’s a win-win situation.
YOU HAVE SHARED THAT YOU ARE REALLY HAVING FUN WITH YOUR TEA BUSINESS. WHAT ARE YOU ENJOYING THE MOST?
I love how my tea business gives me more opportunities to spend time with fun people while enjoying delicious tea. I enjoy the excitement of planning tea parties and placing orders, of delivering tea orders to excited customers, and of helping friends discover wonderful loose leaf teas. I like how it allows me to get to know people I would otherwise see less often or not at all, and how it allows me to get to know the different teas better and learn new tea tips. I also love how getting a shipment of tea in the mail is like opening a birthday present, and I always eagerly anticipate the release of new seasonal teas and sales specials.
